Amplimesh SupaScreen vs Crimsafe

A Factual Comparison for Gold Coast Homeowners

Crimsafe is probably the most recognised name in security screens in Australia. Walk into any Gold Coast showroom, get a few quotes, and someone will bring it up. So when Amplimesh® SupaScreen® comes into the conversation, the obvious question is: what's actually different?

Quite a bit, as it turns out. This comparison covers the key specs for the Amplimesh® SupaScreen® vs Crimsafe decision: mesh material, security testing, warranty, bushfire performance and more. Every figure here comes directly from published manufacturer documentation, so you can use it to have a more informed conversation with any installer, including us.

About the Two Products

Amplimesh® SupaScreen® is the flagship product from Amplimesh®, a brand backed by Capral Aluminium, Australia's largest aluminium extruder with over 85 years in the industry. The mesh is Meshtec high tensile 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel, held in place by a patented Pressure Fit system with no screws, rivets or snap-ins. Amplimesh® claims more than 2.1 million homes secured over 60 years, which gives you a sense of the product's track record in the Australian market.

Crimsafe has been around for more than 25 years and has built genuine brand recognition in Australia. Their range runs from the entry-level Regular through Classic, Ultimate and the iQ, which includes smart-lock technology. This comparison focuses on Crimsafe Ultimate, since it sits at a similar price point and market position to SupaScreen®.

Both products are Australian made and sold through licensed dealer networks only.

Quick Comparison: Amplimesh® SupaScreen® vs Crimsafe at a Glance

The table below will help you see the product and technical differences between Amplimesh® SupaScreen® and Crimsafe at a glance.

* The extended Crimsafe warranty (up to 15 years on Ultimate) requires online registration within 60 days of installation. Without registration, the standard warranty is 10 years.

Mesh material: Why 316 vs 304 Stainless Steel Matters on the Gold Coast

This is the most significant technical difference between the two products, and it's worth understanding properly.

SupaScreen® uses 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel. Crimsafe uses 304 Structural Grade Stainless Steel, which they brand as Tensile-Tuff®.

Both are stainless steel, but different alloys. The key difference is molybdenum: 316 contains it, 304 does not. Molybdenum is what gives 316 its significantly better resistance to salt and chloride corrosion. It is the grade specified for marine and coastal applications for that reason.

For Gold Coast homeowners within a few kilometres of the water, this is a practical consideration. Both screens will vastly outlast a fly screen, but on corrosion resistance, 316 has a real, chemistry-based advantage over 304.

Crimsafe's Tensile-Tuff® mesh uses a slightly thicker 0.9mm wire compared to SupaScreen's 0.8mm. Crimsafe markets this as a strength advantage. Wire thickness is a factor, but it is one variable among several. The mesh retention system, frame strength and performance under the AS 5039 test suite tell you more about real-world security than wire diameter alone.

Security Testing: Reading the Numbers Correctly

Both Amplimesh® SupaScreen® and Crimsafe comply with AS 5039.1-2023, the current Australian Standard for security screen doors and window grilles. Passing it requires clearing five independent tests: dynamic impact, jemmy, knife shear, pull and probe.

One thing worth knowing when you see impact figures quoted: Crimsafe publishes their resistance as a single-impact joule figure (up to 550J for Regular and Classic, up to 750J for Ultimate). SupaScreen® is tested to the AS 5039.1 dynamic impact standard of five consecutive 200-joule impacts. These are different test methodologies, which means the joule numbers cannot be compared directly. Anyone who tells you otherwise is misreading the specs.

What can be stated clearly: SupaScreen® is tested to AS 5039.1-2023, with published dynamic impact results that meet the 5 × 200J threshold for SL200 under the current standard. Crimsafe's published documentation does not specify an SL classification.

Both products pass the full AS 5039 suite. That is the benchmark that matters for Gold Coast homeowners.

Warranty: 16 Years vs 10 (or 15) Years

SupaScreen carries a 16-year warranty from the date of installation, offered through your authorised Amplimesh dealer. It is one of the longest product warranties in the Australian security screen market.

Crimsafe's standard warranty is 10 years. The Ultimate and iQ tiers can be extended to 15 years, but only if the product is registered online within 60 days of installation. Miss that window and the base 10-year warranty applies.

If long-term coverage matters to you and you'd prefer it to be automatic rather than conditional on a registration step, SupaScreen's warranty is the stronger offer.

Bushfire and Cyclone Performance

Bushfire: SupaScreen® is rated to BAL-40 under AS 3959 and can also be used in BAL-FZ (Flame Zone) areas when installed with a window with an FRL of at least -/30/-, or in accordance with AS 1530.8.2. Crimsafe Ultimate carries the same BAL-FZ rating under the same condition. A compliant glass window system is required in both cases.

On fire attenuation, SupaScreen® has published independent test results: it reduces radiant heat entering the home by 59% when subjected to a nominal 40kW/m² heat source, tested to AS 1530.4. Crimsafe directs customers to contact them for fire attenuation data; nothing is published in their brochure.

Cyclone: Crimsafe Ultimate is rated for cyclone regions C and D. SupaScreen® is not cyclone rated as a standalone product. For homes in a declared cyclone zone, Amplimesh's StormGuard® is the right choice, tested to resist debris impact at 44m/s, equivalent to 3,870 joules. For most Gold Coast homes outside cyclone-designated areas, SupaScreen® is well suited to local conditions.

Aesthetics and Additional Features

Both products come in a range of frame colours and are available across hinged, sliding and fixed configurations. Crimsafe offers 13 standard powder coat colours plus two woodgrain finishes and a custom colour option.

The Crimsafe iQ is the most differentiated product in their range for technology. It includes a 10-point locking system with electronic keypad, fingerprint access and app control. Crimsafe states it is the only mesh security screen door in Australia to have passed the European RC2 test standard (EN 1627:2011). If smart home integration is a genuine priority, it is worth a look.

SupaScreen® is also compatible with smart locking technology via the Yale Unity Security Screen Lock, which connects through the Yale Access app and works with Google, Samsung, Alexa and Apple HomeKit.

Which is Right For Your Home?

Both screens are strong products. The decision comes down to what your home actually needs.

If you live on the Gold Coast and want the best corrosion resistance for a salt-air environment, the 316 stainless steel in SupaScreen® has a genuine advantage over the 304 steel in Crimsafe. If you want a 16-year warranty with no registration conditions attached, SupaScreen® is the cleaner offer. If published fire attenuation data matters to you because you're near a boundary wall or in a bushfire-adjacent area, SupaScreen® has it. Crimsafe does not publish these figures.

Crimsafe Ultimate is the better choice if you are in a declared cyclone zone and want cyclone rating built into a single product, or if the iQ's smart-lock technology is something you specifically want.

Frequently Asked Questions

The two are different alloys. 316 contains molybdenum and 304 does not, which gives 316 better resistance to salt and chloride corrosion. That is why 316 is the grade specified for marine and coastal applications. Both will outlast a standard flyscreen by years. How much the difference matters in practice depends on how close your home is to the ocean and how consistently the screens are cleaned and maintained.

No. The two products are tested using different methodologies. Crimsafe publishes a single-impact joule figure, up to 750J on the Ultimate range. SupaScreen® is tested under the AS 5039.1 dynamic impact protocol, which uses five consecutive 200-joule impacts. Both products pass AS 5039.1-2023, the current Australian Standard, which is the benchmark that allows a like-for-like comparison.

SupaScreen® carries a 16-year warranty from the date of installation through your authorised Amplimesh® dealer. Crimsafe's standard warranty is 10 years. Crimsafe Ultimate and iQ can be extended to 15 years, but only if the product is registered online within 60 days of installation. Without that registration step, the standard 10-year warranty applies.

Both products can be used in BAL-FZ (Flame Zone) areas when installed with a compliant glass window system that meets the FRL requirement. SupaScreen® is also rated to BAL-40 in its own right under AS 3959. On fire attenuation, SupaScreen® has independent test results published showing a 59% reduction in radiant heat at a 40kW/m² heat source. Crimsafe does not publish fire attenuation figures and directs customers to contact them directly for that data.

Crimsafe Ultimate is rated for cyclone regions C and D. SupaScreen® is not cyclone rated as a standalone product. For homes in declared cyclone zones, Amplimesh® offers a separate product, StormGuard®, tested to debris impact at 44m/s (3,870 joules). Most Gold Coast suburbs sit outside cyclone-designated regions, so cyclone rating is only a deciding factor for properties in specific areas.
